WHAT IS BATTLEFIELD ACUPUNCTURE?

Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA) is a specialized auricular acupuncture protocol designed to provide rapid pain relief. Tiny Auricular Semi-Permanent (ASP®) needles are placed at specific points on the ear to help reduce pain and support the body's natural healing response. These needle placements stimulate the nervous system, particularly the vagus nerve, allowing the body to shift into a "rest-and-digest" (parasympathetic) state and to reduce pain signaling. Throughout the treatment, you may be asked to stand, walk, or move to assess changes in pain level. Many patients experience some improvement during the treatment, and needles continue working for several days afterwards.

Battlefield Acupuncture was developed in 2001 by Dr. Richard Niemtzow, a physician and retired U.S. Air Force colonel. Building upon the principles of French auriculotherapy developed by Dr. Paul Nogier, he created a simplified protocol to provide rapid pain relief in military settings — hence, the name. Today, BFA is used worldwide in both military and civilian healthcare.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A BATTELFIELD ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT?
During a BFA treatment, your practitioner will insert up to 5 tiny needles into specific points on your ear to disrupt pain signals to the brain. You will be asked to walk around between needle insertions in order to assess your pain response. After the treatment, the needles can be left in your ear. They typically fall out on their own after 2-4 days, though if they feel uncomfortable, your practitioner can also show you how to safely remove them on your own.
HOW LONG DOES A TREATMENT TAKE?
The entire session is quick: usually, you can expect it to take 15-30 minutes.
HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL IT TAKE TO SEE NOTICEABLE RESULTS?
You could get results immediately, or it could take up to 10-12 treatments for comprehensive pain relief, depending on if you're experiencing acute or chronic pain.
Studies show that a large majority of patients (over 75-80%) experience an immediate drop in pain levels. Others may experience significant reduction in pain with continued treatments. These statistics relate to whether you have acute or chronic pain: if you're experiencing acute pain, you'll likely experience immediate relief. The more chronic your pain is, the more treatments you may need.
ARE THERE ANY AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS I SHOULD BE AWARE OF?
You can exercise, shower, and sleep normally with the needles in place, and you can remove them if they become uncomfortable. If you have specific questions, your practitioner can give more tailored advice.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS OF BFA?
Mild soreness at the site (during needle insertion), minor bleeding, bruising, or brief dizziness can happen.
WHO SHOULD NOT RECIEVE BATTLEFIELD ACPUNCTURE?
It is not recommended for people who are pregnant, have an ear infection, or have a severe fear of needles/fainting history.
